I’ve been waiting for the new Blackwing Volume 57 Limited Edition Pencils for quite some time. Not just because of the wonderful tribute to the artist Basquiat as mentioned below. However, it’s also because of the soft graphite that comes in these pencils that makes me so excited. The last few Volumes have firm and extra firm graphite. Therefore, the buttery smooth, gliding texture as you bring life to your ideas makes these soft graphite pencils so wonderful.
First of all, the Blackwing Volume 57 Limited Edition Pencils are a tribute to Jean-Michel Basquiat and his boundary-pushing art. Importantly, the number 57 is a reference to 57 Great Jones Street in New York City, where Basquiat created some of his best-known works. Blackwing is known for supporting art in all its forms. Above all, these Volume editions pay tribute to musicians, painters, and many other influential people.
Secondly, Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the best known artists of his generation. In addition, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Notably, his works are edgy and raw, and through a bold sense of color and composition, he maintains a fine balance between seemingly contradictory forces such as control and spontaneity, menace and wit, urban imagery and primitivism.
The conjunction of various media is an integral element of Basquiat’s art. His paintings are typically covered with text and codes of all kinds: words, letters, numerals, pictograms, logos, map symbols, diagrams and more, and featured multi-panel paintings and individual canvases with exposed stretcher bars, the surface dense with writing, collage and imagery.
Finally, this set of 12 special-edition pencils is sure to inspire you and keep you writing for quite some time. These Volume 57 pencils are equipped with a black eraser. The gold colored ferrule is also engraved with a crown. I can’t wait to see what Blackwing creates next for us!
