Have you ever started writing with your fountain pen and wondered how much ink is left? Or how about the time when you forgot to check the ink level of your fountain pen before leaving the house only to find out it’s almost empty? By that point it’s way too late. When you’re partway through a paragraph and your fountain pen starts skipping or trickling out due to too little ink remaining, it’s so frustrating. I know I’ve hated when that’s happened to me. That’s when I started carrying a dozen fountain pens on me at all times, just in case one runs out and I need the matching color. Ever since the first Conklin Word Gauge Fountain Pen came out in the 1930’s, Conklin provides a solution that’s literally easy to see. The new Conklin Heritage Word Gauge Fountain Pen has a clear viewing window fixing this issue.
Over the years, we’ve enjoyed several versions of the Word Gauge fountain pen. They’re denoted with different colors and designs, and even unique materials. At one point there was even a Word Gauge made of carbon fiber (my favorite). Now, the Conklin Heritage Word Gauge Fountain Pen collection brings three colors to choose from: Black, Blue, and Turquoise. While the black one is a solid color scheme, the blue and turquoise finishes have marbleized lighter nuances in the resin. This gives it great depth and character. I imagine using Monteverde’s Raven Noir ink in the black one. The blue finish seems like Monteverde’s Capri Blue ink matches nicely. Yet the turquoise finish would look great paired with Monteverde’s Caribbean Blue ink.
In addition, with the lineup of Conklin’s upgraded JoWo nib choices, extra fine, fine, medium, broad, stub, and Omniflex, the way the ink looks coming out of your Word Gauge fountain pen will vary in shading possibilities. These steel nibs are reliable, and keep the ink flowing easily. In addition to this, the quality piston filling mechanism is worth mentioning. It’s so easy to use this piston knob, maximizing how much ink gets suctioned into your pen.
Most importantly, as for the ink capacity, the Word Gauge has a large barrel with tons of ink storage. There are numbered markers engraved on the barrel which gauges how many words you have left to write with the remaining ink. While it is a rough estimate, the clear viewing window also allows you to see when you’re running low on ink easily. There will be no more problems with running out of ink unexpectedly.
