As we look at new, impressive fountain pens that are made with unique colors and designs, every once in a while it’s important to “go back to basics”. What I mean by this is enjoying a high-quality writing instrument that perhaps has a more classic shape and design. I love it when you get a lot of “bang for your buck” in a fountain pen (or anything for that matter). In this instance, I’m referring to the Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen. It’s not flashy or showy, and it surprisingly kind of flies under the radar of many fountain pen users.
So, you may be wondering why I’m even writing about this particular pen if it’s not new or extravagant or both? Well, first of all, the nib is a dream to write with. As I mentioned in my review of the Pilot E95S Fountain Pen (here), it’s very uncommon nowadays to find a fountain pen with a 14k gold nib for under $200. And that’s exactly what you get (right at $200) with the Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen. It’s a full size nib (unlike the E95S), and you get to choose from extra fine, fine, medium, and broad. Ink just flows perfectly from the nib onto your paper regardless of nib size. Importantly, this pen fills with Pilot’s proprietary cartridge/converter. Noteworthy is how the converter is Pilot’s high-capacity CON-70 push-button converter, which makes it incredibly easy to refill.
Additionally, the Pilot Custom 74 Fountain Pen is so comfortable to hold in your hand. It’s a mid-size pen, so that means it will fit just right regardless of how large or how small your hand is. Not to mention how the pen is lighter since the cap and barrel are all made of a high quality resin. Speaking of which, the resin is translucent or transparent depending on your color choice. With nine different color options, there’s surely one for you. Choose from: Clear, Smoke, Blue, Violet, Orange, Teal, Merlot, Forest Green, and Grenadine.

I just recently got a Custom 74, and it blew me away. A wonderful surprise of a pen, and I’ll likely get another one at some point.
