Is it just me, or do Platinum pens seem to fly under the radar as high quality Japanese writing instruments? Sure, once in a while we hear talk about their Preppy, Prefounte, Plaisir, and Procyon (try saying that three times fast, haha). But those are only some of their entry level models. Platinum Pen makes incredibly great writing fountain pens that pack a ton of value. Therefore, when I think about getting a mid-range fountain pen, the Platinum President Fountain Pen is ideal.
First of all, among the ranks of higher end, luxurious fountain pens, which brands do you consider? There are so many to choose from, and (as we all know) you can never have enough variety. As an alternative to some of the more notorious European pen brands, I highly recommend Platinum pens. In fact, the Platinum President Fountain Pen is a phenomenal mid-size pen. I would even go so far as to compare it to a very specific, famous German fountain pen.
Secondly, Platinum hasn’t joined the ranks of other companies that only equip their pens with steel nibs at a $200+ price point. Even Platinum’s Century #3776 model (in the low $200’s) has a 14k gold nib. I love the 18k gold nib that comes standard on the Platinum President fountain pen. It even has a wide range of nib size options in the models with Gold Trim. You can choose from: Ultra Extra Fine, Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, and “C” (Double Broad). For some unknown reason, the Rhodium Trim version is only available in Fine, Medium, and Broad.
Importantly, to fill the Platinum President fountain pen, it uses their proprietary cartridge and converter. Unlike many other brands that use proprietary refills, these hold plenty of ink to keep you writing. Another noteworthy detail is that it’s equipped with Platinum’s Slip and Seal technology. This means your fountain pen is always at the ready for use.
Finally, there are three color options currently. This fountain pen is available in Black, Wine Red, and Blue. However, only the Black version is available with Rhodium Trim. There have been many other colors made in the past, but unfortunately they’re discontinued. As you can see, I’ve included in these pictures my older yellow version next to the current blue version for comparison.
