Talk about a blast from the past! Reviving, improving, and paying tribute to pen collections from long ago seems to be the current trend. Creating something new and relevant with ideas borrowed from time is brilliant. As you may recall from my review of the Esterbrook JR Pocket Fountain Pen, these pens only seem to get better and better. The new Monteverde Innova 20th Anniversary Collection is an example of such. It definitely creates a then vs. now comparison.
When Yair (Jerry) Greenberg founded Monteverde Pens USA in 1999, one of the first pens introduced was the Monteverde Innova. It was sold in a picture frame that encased the pen. The idea being to offer a fountain pen made out of carbon fiber that was easily affordable. This pen is almost ¼ of the price of other carbon fiber pens. Carbon fiber itself used to be very expensive, and still is. And remarkably, the price point of the Monteverde Innova hasn’t changed over the last 20 years.
To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Monteverde Pens USA, they launched the Monteverde Innova 20th Anniversary Collection as homage to the original landmark pen. First came the Innova in rose gold appointments. It is available as a numbered limited edition, available in fountain pen and ballpoint. With even better quality construction, a JoWo nib on the fountain pen, coming with an exclusive limited edition black ink, a special commemorative pin, a smooth twist-action retraction on the ballpoint, and a premium gift box with a carbon fiber theme, this is definitely an upgrade to the original.
Following the success of the Monteverde Innova 20th Anniversary Collection in rose gold, we now get to enjoy the new launch of the Innova Limited Edition in chrome appointments. Normally I’d be able to say I prefer one finish over another. Yet as a sucker for anything made of carbon fiber, I truly love both versions (which is why I got both sets)! The aesthetic beauty is there in both versions, and sets these pens apart from the rest.
It’s a cartridge/converter filled fountain pen, so you can use your favorite inks easily. Not to mention your nib choices are plentiful with the high-quality JoWo nib. Choose from extra fine, fine, medium, broad, stub, and Omniflex. Also worth mentioning is about the friction-fit cap. It posts easily and securely with a snap on the back of the barrel.
Both pens (fountain pen and ballpoint) are substantially weighted, so you know you’ve got a solid pen in your hand. This is something I certainly enjoy when picking up a pen to use. It’s not too thick either, having the perfect fit and balance. The ballpoint has a quality twist-mechanism, so you know it’s going to last. Lastly, it uses the Monteverde Parker Style refill. This refill is available in a ton of configurations – ballpoint or gel, with many ink colors and point sizes to choose from. Though, as usual, we recommend the Superbroad in black or blue for ultimate smoothness in your ballpoint pen.
