I find there’s a great common interest between pen enthusiasts and music enthusiasts. We enjoy creativity, and expression of art in different forms. Whether you use fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoints, or mechanical pencils, the possibilities are endless to create and express yourself. Many of us are audiophiles. In that same vein, we also enjoy a wide variety of music. This is why I get particularly excited when a new pen collection is released that has a musical theme. Usually it’s paying tribute to a famous artist or musician or composer. And many of those musicians, etc. utilize these same writing instruments in lieu of technology to unlock their musical masterpieces. In fact, I’m listening to rock/metal music as I type this review. As an exciting addition to Montegrappa’s Icons Series, they just released the Montegrappa David Bowie Blackstar Limited Edition Collection.
First of all, as you may or may not be familiar with David Bowie and his creative genius, he was an English singer, songwriter, and actor. During his lifetime, Bowie’s record sales are estimated at over 100 million records worldwide. Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, further cementing him as legendary. Importantly, we recognize the historic significance of Bowie’s last album, “Blackstar”. It was released merely two days before his passing away at 69 years old (from liver cancer).
Secondly, the Montegrappa David Bowie Blackstar Limited Edition Collection is comprised of a fountain pen and a rollerball. Notably, they’re both modern in design. This is a nod to the futuristic, visual style of the Blackstar album. These pens have black Ruthenium plated brass material for the cap and appointments, while the barrel is a black resin. Importantly, all surfaces have diamond- and laser-engraved grids, glyphs, and motifs created by designer Jonathan Barnbrook.
Interestingly, there are only 801 pieces made in this continuous limited edition. This means there are only 401 fountain pens, and 400 rollerballs. If you’re wondering why such a specific number, it’s in reference to Bowie’s birthday and release date of Blackstar: January 8th. The nib and nose cone of the rollerball are engraved with Bowie’s lightning bolt logo.
Finally, the fountain pens are equipped with a 6mm 18k gold nib and an ebonite feed. The nib is available in your choice of: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, double broad, and stub. I would pair this fountain pen with Monteverde’s Jade Noir ink to have a darker green accompany the pen. As for the rollerball, it refills with Schmidt 888 or 5888 rollerball refills.
