As I wrote about the Montegrappa David Bowie Blackstar LE Collection last week (check it out here), music has such a strong tie to writing instruments of all kinds. Case in point are the new Blackwing Volume 223 Woodie Guthrie Pencils. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of these pencils (ever since discovering them a few years ago). I love the strong connection Blackwing has with supporting the music industry. While a portion of the proceeds from a few of the other Blackwing Volumes limited edition pencils go to a good cause, these Blackwing Volume 223 Woodie Guthrie Pencils are only designated as a tribute to Woodie Guthrie.
Woodie Guthrie is often portrayed in sepia tones that remind us of the “Dust Bowl”. But there was so much more to his artwork. Guthrie filled notebooks and planners with sketches, poems, and paintings on his journeys. He is perhaps most known for his famous folk song “This Land Is Your Land”. Similarly, Guthrie believed that we could all be better, and used his art to try and inspire change.
First of all, the Blackwing Volume 223 Woodie Guthrie Pencils come in the new Blackwing pencil packaging – the vertical box with an easily removable top. Above all, if you need a pencil cup, this comes as close as it gets to one that’s built in to the original container. I also love the way the pencils just hang out in the “cup”, ready to be plucked and used as needed, for instance.
Continuing with the functionality of this limited edition pencil collection is how the graphite is balanced. This means the graphite has a close equivalent to an HB hardness. Importantly, I feel like it’s a little softer – somewhere between HB and B. The softer the graphite, the more smooth your pencil will glide across the paper.
Notably, each pencil features an inspired design of a “ribbon of highway”, “endless skyway”, and “golden valley” from “This Land Is Your Land”. Moreover, the ferrule is matte black, and the eraser is earth toned as a tribute to the many miles Woodie Guthrie traveled. Finally, the question now is what will you create with your box of Volume 223 pencils? What will you do to inspire others and bring change?
