Here’s a pen collection that I’ve wanted to talk about for a while now. In fact, I’ve had to keep it a secret ever since getting a sneak peek at the DC Pen Show. It’s such a beautiful pen collection, and it combines so many of my favorite things. My love for the Visconti Homo Sapiens began with the original Bronze Age. From there Visconti continued to grow the Homo Sapiens line into new, wonderful, and creative offshoots of the original. By now we’re familiar with the Steel Age, Dark Age, various limited editions, the newer Lava Colors, and Tuscan Hills Limited Edition (see my review here). Without further ado, I present to you the Visconti Homo Sapiens Ember Collection.
First of all, the Visconti Homo Sapiens Ember Collection is a limited edition of only 288 pieces. This is definitely more exclusive and limited than Visconti’s usual number of 888 pieces in their limited editions. Also noteworthy is that Visconti kept the magnetic cap closure system that they introduced in the Lava Colors collection.
Secondly, the entire pen is made of a beautiful carbon fiber and copper threads. More specifically, it’s 3k Carbon Fiber threads woven with copper mesh. This creates such a unique overlay, and is made using similar production techniques to what is used in the automotive world. As the 3k Carbon Fiber and copper mesh finishes being woven, it’s infused with ultra-durable epoxy resins. These are the same resins that are used in structural components for formula one race cars.
If you’re wondering how this is made, Visconti describes it best as: “The material is made using a compression molding technique and is then laminated by hand inside a vacuum to obtain a smooth and glossy finish. After lamination the material finally enters a curing cycle at 130 degrees, which allows the material to pass from a semi-fluid to a solid state, and gives the material stability when used at lower temperatures. All stages of the manufacturing process are highly complex and require expert knowledge and detailed attention to obtain the desired results. Once the material is fully stabilized it is turned, cut, and carefully assembled into the Visconti Homo Sapiens ‘Ember’, accented by solid bronze trims.”
In addition, the Ember Collection is made as a fountain pen and rollerball only. Sadly, no ballpoint. However, I’m happy that Visconti retained the overall size, shape, and weight of the previous Homo Sapiens pens as in this collection.
Finally, the fountain pen is equipped with Visconti’s power filler. You’re able to quickly and easily fill your fountain pen with one-handed action. I think a great blue ink to fill this pen with is Monteverde’s Horizon Blue ink. The nib is Visconti’s in-house 18k gold nib, but it’s plated rose gold to match the bronze trim of the pen. Choose from: extra fine, fine, medium, broad, and stub nib sizes. As for the rollerball, it refills with Schmidt 888 and 5888 rollerball refills. The only question remains with a collection this amazing: do you get the fountain pen, the rollerball, or the set?
